Why People Like George Karl Have No Place In Sports

1 year ago written by

This past week former NBA coach George Karl made headlines all across the sports world when Karl’s criticism of former players Carmelo Anthony, JR Smith, and Kenyon Martin went public. Karl has a new book coming out and in the book he takes several shots at former players, most noticeably Knicks star Carmelo Anthony.

Karl said of Anthony: “Carmelo was a true conundrum for me in the six years I had him,” Karl wrote in the book. “He was the best offensive player I ever coached. He was also a user of people, addicted to the spotlight and very unhappy when he had to share it.”

Anthony this past week took the high road and expressed disappointment at the choice of words by his former head coach. Many were disappointed in the harsh word by Karl and even the timing had so many wondering why now? Anthony hasn’t played in Denver for nearly a decade; Anthony has never bad mouth Karl, but Karl has seem to piss off several of his former players, including Warriors staple Andre Iguodala.

Karl’s assumption that Anthony and Martin didn’t know how to be a ‘Man’ was due to the lack of a father in both of their lives. This ignorant assumption is an assumption that so many outsiders of the black community have of black men who see the world differently than their counterparts.

Martin, as expected took great exception to Karl’s fatherless comments:

The disrespect that Karl displayed in his book is alarming and shocking. Karl is nothing more than a diva who is looking to sell books. We’ll sell what transpires in the next coming of weeks.
